Camping Adventures: Port Sanilac, Michigan

After work on Friday Aaron and I loaded his car with camping gear, food, my camera, and lots of beer and headed over to Lake Huron to experience some of the great outdoors. I've been dying to go camping for the past five years so this trip had been a long time coming.

The campground where we stayed wasn't exactly what we had in mind. There was very little nature around us, aside from the newly planted trees and the man-made lake across the street. There was a clubhouse, an arcade, a swimming pool (which was closed), and free wi-fi. While some people might enjoy those amenities while "camping," I do not. If I want free internet and a swimming pool I'll find myself a Marriott.

Despite not loving our campsite we still had a great time. We bought a new tent before the trip and were impressed by how easy it is to set up. We were only a few hundred yards from Lake Huron so we could hear the waves crashing as we fell asleep at night. We cooked over the campfire and on the propane stove we borrowed from my parents. Camping season is almost over so we practically had the place to ourselves.

We've decided that early September is the best time to go camping. The parks aren't as crowded, the tent doesn't get muggy and hot, there are no mosquitoes, and there's just enough of a chill in the air to make you want to sit by the fire and snuggle up under a sleeping bag. It's perfect.

On Saturday we drove to the nearest town and walked around some adorable shops. We also made several stops at roadside parks and enjoyed the water.

Have I mentioned how much I love Michigan? I know I wont be saying that as often when there's a foot of snow on the ground and I'm freezing my butt off, but I really do love it here.

As much as I love getting dressed up and buying fancy makeup and having indoor plumbing I really am an outdoorsy girl at heart. Give me nature trails and a Great Lake and I'm a happy camper.

Throw this guy in the mix and there's no place I'd rather be.

I'd be disappointed with that campsite too!

Love the lake though, and that photo of the leaves is lovely. So glad you had fun in the great outdoors!

PS: You make me want to come back to Michigan! (it's been a looong time since my regular visits to Detroit and Flint!)

How fun! I'll be getting my first taste of Michigan when I head to Ann Arbor next year for a friend's wedding. I cannot wait!

Aw, SO sweet!! Looks like it was a perfect weekend!
I totally want to go camping now! Eric and I have been married for almost 3 and a half years and we've NEVER been camping together. There is something wrong with this picture. Ah I want to go camping so bad! Too bad we don't live close to you, we'd totally tag along on this trip haha!

Unfortunately not your favorite Great Lake... Hopefully Huron was a good stand-in :)

Haha! That's kind of the opposite of the last camping trip we took, our camping site was a little TOO outdoorsy. I mean the site was actually perfect, but it was an hour away from ANY type of store or anything, something we weren't prepared for. I'm glad you got to do a trip this year, I'm sad we haven't been able to and we're kind of running out of time!

that very organized park should be ashamed of itself for calling it a "campground." people can't unplug for a weekend in nature? what a sad world. lake huron, on the other hand, looks beautiful and seems to provide the right amount of nature for feeling refreshed.
